Chapter 1254: Abduction

Two vehicles slowly drove out of the street.
These two cars belonged to the two councilors, respectively, but now only a bodyguard was driving one of them. Both councilors were sitting in the other car, watching the Pu family mansion gradually recede from view through the window, a faint hint of disdain in their eyes.
"What do you think?" Councilor Tong asked.
"It's normal for the Pu family to be hostile towards us. After all, they used to be the spokespeople for this domain... Now that we've seized power from them, it's natural for them to be unwilling to accept it."
"Hmph, what can their unwillingness do? It's wartime now; everything must be handled with special urgency."
"Han Meng is a smart man; he should know what we're going to do..."
"He can't leave the Pu family now, and even if he did, as long as he dared to act against us, it would be a dead end," Councilor Tong said flatly. "This isn't a remote place like the Aurora Domain. Attacking a Union Councilor during wartime... Even if he is the Chief of Judgment, he can't bear the consequences."
"Once the 'story' from the Aurora Domain councilor is settled, at the next Union Council meeting, we'll be able to completely destroy his credibility as a judge. That way, we'll also be temporarily safe..."
"I still think only dead men can keep secrets."
The air suddenly fell silent.
"You and I both know very well that if the things we've done in the past are exposed, no one will escape; we'll definitely face the firing squad." Councilor Tong paused. "We don't have the divine path; we've struggled our way up to today, and finally, we have an opportunity to make a big move... Do you want Han Meng to hold our leverage forever?"
"But Lord Nanhai knows what we've done, and he still hasn't moved against us..."
"Do you think he truly favors us? No, the only reason he hasn't moved against us is because it's wartime. If he were to replace us both now, he wouldn't find more capable people to substitute in a short time." Councilor Tong sneered, "Believe it or not, once the war ends, neither of us will escape."
Councilor Sun wasn't foolish; with this hint, he immediately realized the issue:
"No wonder Lord Nanhai hasn't moved against us and is holding our crimes firmly in his grasp... Once the war ends, he can simply use Han Meng to bring up this matter again. Then, no matter what role we played in the war, he can naturally instigate a purge, securing positions for his confidantes as councilors in peacetime and monopolizing power..."
"Therefore, if we want to live, we must... kill Han Meng before the war ends," Councilor Tong said slowly. "As long as Han Meng is dead, even if Lord Nanhai brings up our crimes again, there will be no living witness, and the room for maneuver will be much greater."
"But they transferred Han Meng from the Spirit Void Domain to the Nanhai Domain precisely because they valued his combat power. How can just the two of us kill him?"
"One step at a time. First, we'll use this incident in the Aurora Domain to diminish Han Meng's credibility, making him gradually fade from the core vision of the high-ranking officials... When the war truly begins, we'll use some methods to ensure he dies in battle in the Nanhai Domain. After all, Nanhai is our jurisdiction; there will always be opportunities."
"You truly are something."
"Heh heh, you flatter me."
The two councilors sat in the back seat of the vehicle, each remaining silent, watching the receding street view outside the window, wondering what plans they were concocting in their minds.
Whirr-whirr-whirr—
Just then, a series of strange rumbling sounds emanated from the car's engine.
The sedan, which had been driving normally, began to gradually slow down as if losing power. Amidst the bodyguard's surprised exclamation, it finally stopped by the side of the road.
"What's going on?" Councilor Sun asked with a frown.
"Please wait a moment, sirs, I'll get out and check."
The man, who served as both bodyguard and driver, got out of the car, opened the hood, and carefully inspected it for a while before muttering to himself and walking back.
"Sirs, it seems the engine has malfunctioned."
"Did you check carefully? Is it deliberate or an accident?" Councilor Tong asked cautiously.
"I checked thoroughly. There are no signs of human tampering; it just suddenly broke down..."
Councilor Sun smiled and said to Councilor Tong:
"Aren't you being too sensitive? This is the Nanhai Domain; who would dare to lay a hand on a councilor here?"
"It never hurts to be careful."
Councilor Tong, receiving the bodyguard's answer, knew he had been overly cautious and got directly out of the car.
At the same time, Councilor Sun's bodyguard was seen driving another empty car, emerging from the faint mist and quietly stopping behind their vehicle...
"Alright, you go ahead and deal with this car. The two of us will take this one." Councilor Sun waved his hand and walked with Councilor Tong toward the car behind them.
"Yes, sir."
Councilor Tong didn't think much of it this time and got into the car directly with Councilor Sun. As the bodyguard gently pressed the accelerator, the vehicle bypassed the broken-down car and continued forward.
On the deserted street, only Councilor Tong's bodyguard remained by the car, diligently beginning to repair it...
Ten-odd seconds later,
Another car belonging to Councilor Sun emerged from the mist.
The bodyguard instantly froze.
"What's going on? Where are the two councilors?" Councilor Sun's bodyguard got out of his car. Seeing Councilor Tong's bodyguard repairing the car, which was empty, he immediately asked in confusion.
"Shouldn't I be asking you?! Why did you come from that direction...?"
"What do you mean, 'Why did I come from that direction...'? Coming from the Pu family, isn't that the direction?" The bodyguard frowned. "Just now, somehow, fog suddenly rolled in, and there were quite a few pedestrians on the road, so I slowed down a bit... What happened?"
The other bodyguard seemed to realize something, sharply looking in the direction the previous car had departed, his face turning extremely grim!
"It's over!!!"
Squeak—squeak...
The wipers mechanically swept across the windshield, clearing the mist-laden moisture and producing a series of squeaking sounds.
Chen Ling casually tore off the note stuck to the door handle, gently adjusted the rearview mirror, glanced at the two councilors who were each staring blankly in the back seat, then turned the steering wheel, driving the vehicle onto another desolate, unfrequented path.
The note fluttered down next to the seat:
*Mist rising, pedestrians hurried**Two councilors in a vehicle, engine unexpectedly failed, stopped by the roadside**—Weaver of Fate.*
With one phrase for controlling the weather and another for creating an accident, Chen Ling effortlessly performed a trick, taking away the two councilors right under the noses of their two bodyguards... Compared to Chen Ling, they were still too green.
Realizing the vehicle had deviated from its route, Councilor Sun was startled. He looked up at the bodyguard in confusion, just about to say something...
The next moment, his gaze met Chen Ling's through the rearview mirror.
For some reason,
the bodyguard's eyes felt utterly unfamiliar to him.
