In the dim light, Chen Ling slowly opened his eyes.
The dull ceiling came into view. The emptiness and headache of a hangover washed over him like a tide. He instinctively furrowed his brows, propped himself up with his palms on the bed, and slowly sat upright.
The underground palace was silent and empty. Other than Chen Ling, no living creature made a sound, as quiet as a cage detached from the world.
The figure draped in a large red opera robe sat silently by the bed, motionless as a statue.
After an unknown period,
a sigh echoed through the vast palace.
Chen Ling decided to go for a walk. He stood up, walked along the empty corridor of the palace, and emerged outside.
This time, Wu Yi was not at the palace entrance; only two small centipedes were waiting respectfully. Chen Ling recognized them as Wu Yi's subordinates, members of his former centipede legion.
Upon seeing Chen Ling emerge, the two small centipedes instantly became a little nervous. They simultaneously prostrated themselves, respectfully waiting for Chen Ling to sit on their backs.
Chen Ling casually chose one of the centipedes and stepped onto it.
"Great King, where would you like to go?"
"...I don't know," Chen Ling paused. "Let's just wander around."
The two centipedes exchanged glances. Although perplexed, they carried Chen Ling directly towards other parts of the Ghost Scorn Abyss.
The first place Chen Ling arrived at was the open area where the primeval challenge had taken place yesterday. Before he even got close, a strong scent of blood assailed his nostrils. His brow instinctively furrowed, and the next second, the severed limbs of various venomous insects came into his view.
It seemed to have endured countless deadly battles; blood and venom had soaked into the earth, and cracks from combat were everywhere. In the center of the clearing, atop the already hollowed-out corpse of the centipede Venomous Head, a massive, bloody, pulpy red sphere stood silently.
"What is that thing?" Chen Ling asked, puzzled.
"Great King, that is Lord Wu Yi."
"After you returned to rest yesterday, Lord Wu Yi encountered several primeval challenges in a row and fought all night long. If it weren't for Lord Wu Yi having been baptized by your power, making his life force exceptionally resilient, and his frantic consumption of the original centipede Venomous Head's body to regain strength, he would probably have already..."
"However, Lord Wu Yi, perhaps from eating too much of the Venomous Head's body or due to the baptism of your power, began secreting a strange mucus this morning. Finally, he curled into a ball and became this sphere... We can't wake him no matter how much we call."
A trace of surprise flashed in Chen Ling's eyes.
Normally, the calamities of the Ghost Scorn Abyss shouldn't turn into a "sphere." Even if Wu Yi ate the original centipede Venomous Head, he shouldn't have mutated to this extent... Therefore, it's highly probable that it's due to the Red Star Vow Power within him.
Could it be that Wu Yi was severely wounded yesterday, fought desperately, and finally activated the Red Star Vow Power accumulated within him, which began to nourish his body in his dying moments?
If that's the case, then it's definitely a good thing for Wu Yi. Perhaps when he breaks out of this sphere, he'll give him a surprise.
After confirming that Wu Yi was not in any life-threatening danger, Chen Ling once again climbed onto the centipede's back and began to stroll around the Ghost Scorn Abyss.
But he soon discovered that there was truly nothing to explore here.
The Ghost Scorn Abyss was simply a massive den of venomous insects. Aside from centipedes burrowing into the ground, geckos crawling on walls, croaking toads, scorpions scuttling about, and venomous snakes sleeping in their respective holes, there was nothing else.
If there was any difference, it was that wherever he went, the surrounding venomous insects would stop what they were doing and respectfully bow to him.
Then, the burrowers would burrow, the wall-crawlers would crawl, and the sleepers would sleep.
There were no grand buildings, no complex social interactions, only pitch-black, deep underground caves and countless insects in the darkness, all monotonously alike.
Chen Ling quickly grew tired of it. He should have realized this sooner; he was a human who had experienced two brilliant eras. How could he resonate with a group of insects? It was like lying on the ground watching ants as a child; perhaps curious at first, but after a while, realizing there wasn't much to it.
By common sense, a mischievous child at this point would start burning them with fire, drowning them with water, stuffing firecrackers into their ant holes, or employing various whimsical methods to torment them and find amusement in their reactions.
Thinking of this, Chen Ling suddenly understood the former Mockery Calamity.
In such a dull place, only by actively creating some change could one bring a shred of enjoyment to a stagnant life.
"No more wandering... let's go back." Chen Ling waved his hand in weariness.
The two centipedes immediately turned around and carried Chen Ling back to the underground palace.
Compared to observing the daily lives of a group of insects, perhaps exploring the former Mockery Calamity's personality would be more interesting.
Chen Ling began exploring the rooms of the underground palace one by one. This feeling was like opening a blind box: you never knew if the next door you opened would lead to a perverse dismemberment room, a pink dressing room filled with various dresses, or a highly artistic painting exhibition hall.
"Hmm?"
"There's actually something like this here?"
Chen Ling held an old-fashioned radio, pulled from a corner of one of the rooms, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.
He patted the radio's surface. With the communication device and electromagnetic induction principles activated, a disturbed electromagnetic sound hummed, and signals from the human realm crossed the Grey Realm barrier, connecting directly to the radio.
"Static..."
"Welcome to today's 'Spiritual Void Sports Talk.' I'm your host, K2."
"After fourteen days, the final showdown between two generations of Chess Sages has finally concluded. The former ten-time champion lost by half a move, ultimately defeated, and a new generation of Chess Sage, born of fate, has emerged as the new Chess Spirit leader, ascending to Eighth Tier!"
"'King of Sports' tryouts begin today. One hundred forty-six contestants will compete together, and only the top six will have a chance to secure promotion. Today, K2 is also fortunate to host last season's King of Sports, Li Shengmen, on our program. Now, let's invite Mr. Li to predict this season's events..."
As if he had discovered a treasure, Chen Ling carried the radio directly out of the room and walked towards the throne.
This radio might be his only form of entertainment for a considerable time to come.
Chen Ling continuously adjusted the radio's frequency, attempting to receive signals from more realms. Amidst the static, a voice spoke again.
"I am Chen Yu, a frontline reporter from the Suspended Jade Realm!"
"I am currently on the battlefield at the realm's border, broadcasting the latest situation to everyone. This broadcast has been approved by the Suspended Jade Realm government, so please do not panic..."
