Lu Xun did not enter. He simply stood there silently, gazing up at the Buddha statue amidst the interplay of light and shadow. His eyes, usually calm and profound, held a touch of confusion at this moment.
His recent experiences, and the helicopter pursuing him, flashed through his mind. After a long silence, he still murmured uncertainly, "My sacrifice... it's meaningful for humanity, isn't it?"
Lu Xun did not believe in Buddha, nor any religion. He was questioning the Buddha statue in the darkness, but even more so, he was questioning himself. Unlike Wu Tongyuan and the others who fled, he chose to stay and actively cooperate with the experiments. This was a gamble based on trust, but now, he felt lost about the future of this gamble.
The Buddha statue remained silent, simply sitting quietly on its divine pedestal, looking down upon all beings.
Lu Xun gave it a deep look, then prepared to turn and leave. Just as he took half a step back, a blinding flash of light suddenly illuminated from behind him! *Click*— A loud camera shutter sound accompanied a mysterious force that instantly filled the entire space. Lu Xun spun around fiercely, but in the next moment, everything in his vision seemed to stretch into lines of light and shadow, like pulled threads... His figure instantly vanished from where he stood!
In the empty corridor, a young man in a black windbreaker slowly approached, carrying a camera at his chest.
"Tsk... all this trouble just for that one shot," the young man grumbled, a good deal of resentment still on his face. He lowered his gaze to the camera's display. A moment later, a photo was printed on the spot.
He held one corner of the photo between his fingertips, swayed it slightly in the air, then squinted, examining it carefully against the faint starlight.
The photo showed an open temple gate. A Buddha statue sat on its divine pedestal, bathed in light and shadow, and in front of it, a man in black turned his head, looking back sideways.
"Not bad, the composition is really good," the young man muttered self-admiringly. He turned and walked out of the temple. At the same time, his cell phone rang with a crisp sound.
"Hello?""Yes, he's been captured.""Move the lab to the suburbs? That makes sense... he already escaped once. If he were to transmit any information, the old lab would be exposed...""Alright, I'll wait for you at the platform."
After hanging up, his figure gradually disappeared outside the temple gate, his destination unknown.
"How are you? Are you alright?" Chen Ling asked, glancing at Yang Xiao in the passenger seat while driving.
Yang Xiao's face was a little pale, as if he hadn't fully recovered from the terrifying leap. After taking a deep breath, he said helplessly, "I'm not hurt... it was just a bit scary."
"Good mental fortitude. I didn't think you'd jump so easily."
"Because I saw you all jump."
"We all have ways to save ourselves, but you don't... If I hadn't caught you, you might have become the first of the Nine Lords to die from a fall."
The vehicle pulled up near Huangcheng Temple. Both got out simultaneously and walked straight towards the temple, which lay silent in the night.
As the two approached the temple entrance, Chen Ling's brow suddenly furrowed.
"Something's wrong..."
"What is it?"
"The main gate is open." Chen Ling pointed to the door, which was ajar just enough for one person to pass through, and said in a deep voice, "With Dr. Lu's abilities, he wouldn't need to use the main entrance at all."
Yang Xiao's brows furrowed as well. "Are you saying..."
"Let's go inside and see."
Chen Ling and Yang Xiao entered the temple and quickly searched around. They saw no one, including Lu Xun.
"Given Old Lu's speed, he should have arrived much earlier than us," Yang Xiao mused. "But he's not here..."
"It seems someone got here before us."
Chen Ling's expression was very calm. He squatted down, a hint of apricot red appearing at the corner of his eye, as his secret pupils began to meticulously observe the surrounding details. "There are no signs of a struggle, which means the opponent likely launched a sneak attack, and their rank is above Dr. Lu's..."
"But how did they get here so fast? It only took us a few minutes to arrive, yet they were faster than us? It's as if they knew beforehand."
Chen Ling stood up and slowly said, "It's possible they did know beforehand."
"So what do we do now?"
Chen Ling didn't answer. He calmly pulled out his flip phone from his pocket, and in the depths of his eyes, a faint aurora began to spread...
The next moment, Chen Ling connected directly to all surrounding electronic surveillance devices via his phone. In the neon-lit night, pairs of never-dimming electronic eyes silently took over the city.
"Don't worry, they won't escape my sight."
"Dr. Lu advocates avoiding conflict, and I have no objections. But now that they've actively provoked us... we'll just have to see whose 'hand' is tougher." Chen Ling said faintly.
Lu Xun looked at the world before him, filled with noise and static, his expression incredibly grim.
At this moment, he was still standing at the entrance of the Buddha hall. However, apart from a small area around him, all other scenes in his vision were black and white, filled with black particles, like a blurred photo taken in the dark.
Lu Xun didn't know what had happened; he only knew that after a flash of white light from behind him, the world had transformed into this.
He tried to walk out of the temple, but as soon as he stepped out of the 4:3 color frame of the Buddha hall entrance, he would automatically walk back in from the other side, like a smaller-scale 'ghost wall' phenomenon.
Lu Xun also tried to sense the starlight, to use the galactic tides to transfer himself, but in this world, he couldn't feel the presence of the starry sky at all...
He was trapped here.
"A path of some 'dark hand' then..." Lu Xun murmured to himself.
Lu Xun didn't know how they had found him, nor their rank, but he knew he had most likely been captured by the enemy. This small 4:3 color frame was his prison.
Lu Xun's first reaction at that moment was to wonder if Chen Ling and Yang Xiao were safe. However, judging by the time, they shouldn't have arrived at the scene yet. If the person who captured him left promptly, they likely wouldn't meet... But this also meant that Chen Ling and Yang Xiao wouldn't know his location and wouldn't be able to rescue him.
Just as Lu Xun was pondering whether he could escape on his own, the color frame around him suddenly twisted, as if someone had forcibly ripped it apart, tearing the surrounding world into two halves!
The next moment, a dizzying sensation overwhelmed Lu Xun. His vision blurred, and his body fell heavily onto a hard surface.
At the same time, a voice slowly emerged from in front of him: "Dr. Lu... we meet again."
