Chapter 736: South Wild Demon King

“What is that?”

“An immortal?”

Many high-level demons, despite being immediately startled by the Devourer Beast, noticed the pavilions and towers on its back and saw Jiang Xueling casting spells. They immediately realized this was an immortal beast.

“Hmph, even if you are an immortal, to seize a treasure as soon as it appears, what kind of immortality do you cultivate?”

One demon cursed angrily and flew directly into the sky. Many other demons, confident in their strength, followed suit. High in the sky, they converged with unspoken understanding, charging towards Jiang Xueling, the immortal who was casting spells.

Some demons transformed into streaks of demonic light, dragging blurred forms of their demonic bodies, moving with incredible speed. Others directly revealed their true forms and lunged at Jiang Xueling.

Jiang Xueling’s face remained expressionless. With a gentle flick of her sleeve, a burst of immortal light transformed, resembling delicate clouds artfully changing. The immortal light met the demonic creatures, then, just before contact, it transformed into a gigantic flowing ribbon.

“Bang…” “Bang…” “Bang…” “Rip…”

Many demons charged head-on but felt no solid resistance, being repelled outwards one after another. A few, using their own power, managed to tear through the ribbon, only to see a flash of silver light behind it as a dart pierced through, raising puffs of blood mist.

“Roar…”

“This is bad, this woman has profound cultivation!”

“Retreat!”

Some demons realized the situation was dire. The female immortal’s seemingly effortless and insubstantial attacks were immensely powerful, her cultivation unfathomable. They took advantage of the chaos to escape.

Meanwhile, those demons who had been shaken off by the ribbon were still dizzy and disoriented. Before they could steady themselves, they felt a gust of wind blowing down from above. Looking up, they saw a clear sky, followed by an even stronger suction. Looking down, the gaping maw of the Devourer Beast was drawing ever closer.

“Ah…” “Run!”

The demons’ demonic aura surged, their demonic power erupting throughout their bodies. Around them, streams of mist, accompanied by tiny vortices, seemed to flow downwards in a short time. No matter how the demons tried to fly away or cast spells, they remained within the range of the Devourer Beast’s enormous mouth. Only the few who were already on the outermost periphery managed to escape by sheer luck.

“Let’s fight! Attack the immortal beast’s mouth together!” “Right, let’s see how tough its mouth is.”

Many demons simply changed direction, facing the Devourer Beast’s gigantic maw. Some attacked with long-range spells, while others manifested their true forms, expanding them to their maximum size, and struck the beast’s mouth with sharp claws and fangs.

But in the next moment, the demons rushing towards the gigantic mouth simply vanished into it. There was no blood from claws and fangs tearing flesh, not even sparks from hard objects rubbing together. Demonic light, sharp energy, spiritual light... all disappeared inside the enormous maw.

This scene sent shivers down the spines of some demons, who desperately cast spells to attack the Devourer Beast. However, being close to the Devourer Beast’s open maw was like being trapped in some strange formation. Spells directed at the beast merely caused some resisting magical light to flicker on the outer edges of its upper and lower lips, while anything aimed directly into its mouth vanished completely.

With both desperate escape and desperate attacks proving fruitless, the remaining demons were eventually swallowed whole by the Devourer Beast.

“Woo-ooh…”

In these two gulps, the Devourer Beast consumed at least dozens of mountain spirits and demons. Yet, many more monsters and spirits still remained in and around this mountain area. Some had already quietly fled, while others stubbornly refused to leave.

But everyone knew that this massive immortal beast was not to be trifled with. The demons scattered in all directions, constantly changing their positions, waiting for someone else to be rash enough to pull chestnuts out of the fire first.

At this moment, a spirit, using a subtle burrowing technique, secretly burrowed underground, arriving at the mountain peak containing the treasure. Within the mountain, it could feel the earth and stone ahead radiating layers of light.

‘If it’s a pill, I’ll grab one or two and run. If it’s a treasure, then even a glimpse will do if I can’t get it!’

However, upon burrowing into the heart of the mountain, all it found was a burning stick of incense. Even without recognizing it as a Demon-Attracting Incense, this object, which resembled neither a treasure nor a pill, instinctively put the spirit on alert.

A moment later, the spirit, deciding to go all out, grabbed the Demon-Attracting Incense, cast a spell, and tossed it upwards, while quickly burrowing its way out.

Once the Demon-Attracting Incense left the mountain, all the demons’ gazes turned towards the source of the fragrance and the treasure light.

“What is this?” “It’s some kind of mind-bewildering incense, we’ve been tricked!”

Amidst their astonishment, the demons scattered and fled. Throughout this entire process, Jiang Xueling and the Devourer Beast showed no signs of stopping. Demons were constantly being flung away by Jiang Xueling and then swallowed by the Devourer Beast.

On the Star-Gazing Platform, Ju Yuanzi and Lian Baiping watched the battle unfold outside. Although some of the arriving demons had considerable cultivation, they were no match for a great cultivator like Jiang Xueling, especially with the addition of the terrifying Devourer Beast.

“It’s far too late to run now.”

Ju Yuanzi said this, and Lian Baiping stroked his beard, nodding in agreement.

“Too late for what?”

Ji Yuan’s voice came, drawing the attention of the two nearby individuals back to him. He had slowly raised his head and was rubbing his forehead; the dream before had been quite mentally taxing.

“Mr. Ji, you’re awake? We were just talking about the Southern Wilderness demons fighting with Daoist Jiang and the Devourer Beast.”

Ji Yuan was slightly taken aback. Weren’t they supposed to go to the Heavenly Secret Pavilion? How did they end up fighting Southern Wilderness demons?

It was then that Ji Yuan heard the roars and screams of some demons, as well as the sounds of wind and thunder from spell-casting. He looked around and saw demonic qi and immortal light constantly clashing, but it was usually the demons fleeing, only to be caught and swallowed by Little Three.

“What’s wrong with this Devourer Beast?”

“Sir, you might not know, but according to Weimei Sect, when the Devourer Beast awakens, it always undergoes a transformation and aggressively seeks food to devour. The numerous demons in the Southern Wilderness attracted it here, and even Daoist Jiang has no way to stop it.”

Ji Yuan frowned, no longer lingering on the details of his dream. He stood up from the desk and walked towards the edge of the Star-Gazing Platform, with Ju Yuanzi and Lian Baiping following suit.

In Ji Yuan’s eyes, what he saw was not so much Jiang Xueling and the Devourer Beast fighting against the demons together, but rather a one-sided crushing defeat for the demons.

It was like a small pond full of small fish, and the Devourer Beast was a giant scoop net with a vortex, continuously sweeping back and forth. The small fish struggled to escape, but most were scooped into the net one by one.

Soon, this mountain area quieted down. Whether Jiang Xueling intentionally held back or simply couldn’t manage everyone, all the demons who could escape had fled, and most of those who remained had entered the Devourer Beast’s belly.

A faint scent wafted by, and Ji Yuan’s eyes flickered as he looked at a burning remnant of incense in the distant sky.

“This object is called Demon-Attracting Incense, a type of mind-bewildering incense. It’s easy to mistake its scent and unusual light for some kind of pill or treasure.”

While they were talking, the Devourer Beast continued to roar incessantly. After eating so many demons, it showed no signs of being full. Under Jiang Xueling’s guidance, it turned elsewhere. In the distance, there were more demon-luring sites set up by Weimei Sect disciples.

Jiang Xueling stood on the Devourer Beast’s head, looking back. After a soft sigh, she reined in her divine power. The amount of food just now was merely enough to whet Little Three’s appetite.

“Daoist Jiang, where does Little Three intend to go?”

Jiang Xueling glanced to the side. Ji Yuan, Ju Yuanzi, and Lian Baiping had arrived beside her.

“Ah, Little Three is terribly hungry. It will go wherever there are many demons. We can only set up a few traps in advance, hoping that after a few more meals, it will regain most of its sanity and not cause too much trouble…”

“That might be a bit difficult.”

Ji Yuan muttered, knowing that the more Little Three ate in the dream, the greater the contrast it would experience upon waking.

In just two days, since the Devourer Beast entered the Southern Wilderness mountains, Weimei Sect had used Demon-Attracting Incense seven times to lure demons. The Devourer Beast had devoured hundreds of demons frantically. The minor injuries it sustained during this time were mere superficial wounds for Little Three, yet they only made it more excited, showing no signs of being satiated.

On the third day, the Devourer Beast drifted through a desolate valley deep in the Southern Wilderness mountains, with Jiang Xueling standing atop its head, frowning as she surveyed the surroundings.

“No Demon-Attracting Incense, and no disciples from my Weimei Sect?”

There should have been several Weimei Sect disciples here, setting up traps to lure in the less intelligent demons, but at this moment, the area for hundreds of miles was unusually quiet.

Ji Yuan and Ju Yuanzi were playing chess on the Star-Gazing Platform, with Lian Baiping watching beside them. Sensing the current situation, all three looked up.

Lian Baiping made some quick calculations with his fingers, while Ji Yuan opened his divine eyes and scanned the surroundings.

“Trouble is brewing.” “Indeed, it was never going to be smooth sailing all the way.”

“I, Ji, truly wish to witness the methods of these so-called Southern Wilderness Demon Kings.”

In just a few words, the three seemed to have already identified what the Devourer Beast was about to face, while Jiang Xueling, being in the thick of it, still frowned deeply.

Suddenly, the ground outside the desolate valley vibrated violently. The next moment, the surrounding mountains and crust of the earth astonishingly began to flip upwards.

“Rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble…”

A total of five sections of the earth’s crust flipped up simultaneously. The largest one even had over a dozen mountain peaks on it. All the sections of crust cast a shadow over the Devourer Beast, Little Three. In Ji Yuan’s divine eyes, the mountains and crust gleamed sharply, indicating they were much more than just overturned earth.

The sections of crust, like falling petals, descended with incredible speed.

“Little Three!”

“Woo-ooh—”

The Devourer Beast abruptly swung its tail, powerfully sweeping at the nearest section of crust.

The crust vibrated, directly swept backward, yet it did not break apart. The other four sections had already fallen.

“Bang!” “Bang!” “Bang!” “Bang!”

Smoke and dust billowed, and shattered rocks rained down. Beneath the desolate valley, two figures hovered: a burly man dressed in rough animal skins, and a young man in a brocade robe. Both pairs of demonic eyes watched the collapsing, falling sections of earth. Behind them, the area surrounding the desolate valley was filled with various spirits and demons, who had previously been completely undetectable.

“The Devourer Beast?” “Hmph, those old hags from Weimei Sect?”
