**An Attempt at a New Technique: Yan Yun Xiaoxiao**
Ah, finally, today I have time to relax. I had a good, comfortable sleep and woke up to find such a brilliant chapter from Banana. I couldn't resist writing a review.
The writing technique in this chapter is quite ingenious. Four scenes are described in rotation, each with intersecting points, similar to the camera transitions in *Crazy Stone*, used to precisely narrate complex scenes happening simultaneously.
This technique has also been used by Jin Yong and Huang Yi in their multi-protagonist novels. However, to switch so skillfully and narrate so smoothly within a mere three thousand words, Banana's literary prowess is truly astonishing.
Let's analyze the actions of all characters at these two time points.
At the first time point, the two Su brothers were engaged in a fight with Chen Jiwen and others, finding themselves at a disadvantage. At this moment, Li Pin and Ning Yi, who were originally downstairs, came up, saw the situation, and went over to greet them, while Gu Yanzhen's party waited to watch the show.
This scene is narrated from both Gu Yanzhen's and Ning Yi's perspectives. Two originally unrelated plotlines ingeniously intersect due to the fight between the Su brothers and Chen Jiwen's group. In reality, Ning Yi and Gu Yanzhen were bound to interact, but how to create this intersection and ignite conflict is a true test of literary skill.
Through the technique of intersecting scenes, Banana successfully brought Ning Yi into the center of the conflict without any artificiality. From a literary standpoint, this should be considered an attempt at a new descriptive technique.
As for the first "unexpected" element, it naturally refers to what follows: Chen Jiwen, who initiated the challenge, picked up his brush to write a poem but hesitated to put it to paper, which understandably surprised Gu Yanzhen and the others.
At the second time point, Ning Yi and Li Pin came over to greet them. The Su brothers responded awkwardly, while Chen Jiwen picked up his brush to write a poem but hesitated, seemingly remembering something. At this point, Gu Yanzhen and the others watched with cold eyes, not understanding the situation.
The ellipses in both scenes naturally indicate Chen Jiwen's surprise upon realizing the person before him was Ning Yi. He likely feared Ning Yi had deliberately come to cause trouble. Furthermore, he realized Ning Yi's scholarship far surpassed his own; even with his utmost effort, he couldn't compose a poem one-tenth as good as "Shuidiao Getou." Challenging Li Pin could boost his reputation, but challenging Ning Yi would only bring shame upon himself. Therefore, after these thoughts, Chen Jiwen picked up his brush but dared not write.
The reason for his hesitation, however, was known only to Chen Jiwen; no one else, including Ning Yi, understood it. This further highlighted the unexpectedness and dramatic nature of this turning point.
This scene is also narrated from both Ning Yi's and Gu Yanzhen's perspectives, and describing it separately twice is incredibly skillful. Narrating from Ning Yi's perspective allows readers to subtly enter the conflict between the Su brothers and Chen Jiwen through Ning Yi's viewpoint, creating a more immersive experience.
Conversely, narrating from Gu Yanzhen's perspective allows the reader to detach from the conflict and observe it as an outsider, making Chen Jiwen's hesitation at that moment even clearer and more understandable.
Thus, these three thousand words transform an ordinary scene into a surprising and intricately unfolding narrative.
As for the subsequent plot developments, I, Yan Yun, have some general guesses. However, to avoid influencing Banana's narrative arrangements, I won't reveal them. Let's all wait and see how Ning Yi resolves this turning point.
At Bailuzhou, lights brightly illuminate, people gather densely. In the small Wenmo Building, scholars engage in a battle of pens. Ning Yi versus Gu Yanzhen – a clash of titans, the excitement is about to begin!
It's worth noting that while this scene transition technique is extremely brilliant, it might initially confuse first-time readers. One needs to read it multiple times and savor it to fully appreciate its cleverness. Therefore, this technique should be used judiciously, depending on Banana's own discretion.
On another note, does Banana mind if I speculate on the plot in my reviews? If not, I, Yan Yun, will write down some of my guesses regarding the subsequent plot developments. If it might affect Banana's narrative arrangements, then I will only comment on chapters already released, haha.
Also, Banana's updates these past few days have been impressive, kudos! Judging by this progress, perhaps in about two months, the personalities of the main characters will become fully fleshed out. At that time, I, Yan Yun, will also write some evaluations of female characters such as Yunzhu, Xiaochuan, and Su Tan. Perhaps I will title it "The Twelve Beauties" and see if Banana can allow me to fill this list of twelve beauties in this book, haha. Let's all work together!
These are just some humble thoughts. Please feel free to criticize and offer corrections!
