Gu Yanzhen, though becoming panic-stricken and covering his face with tears under the sadistic intimidation of the Bloodthirsty Butcher, I believe this reaction was primarily due to extreme, unexpected surprise. His original plan was meticulously laid out: to tie up these two individuals and thoroughly humiliate them. Perhaps he would debase Yun Zhu in front of Xiao Ningzi; after he was done with Xiao Liuzi, he might even get a share of the action, perhaps even condescendingly granting Xiao Ningzi a final moment of sensual pleasure, as a form of arrogant pity. "See? This is your woman, but what can you do? I’m abusing her right in front of you. Oh, you like her? Fine, you can have her too—copulate like dogs, right here in front of me." The abuse of Xiao Ningzi would naturally be unavoidable, and of course, the ultimate fate for both would be death. Perhaps by the first day, he would grow tired of them and, with a hint of disinterest and disgust, casually wave his hand to Xiao Liuzi: "Bury them alive." Later, he might recall these two, or perhaps not at all; but even if he did, the memory would certainly not be profound, as both would have become utterly insignificant to him. Perhaps Yun Zhu wasn't insignificant before, but after she slapped Xiao Yanzi, the situation changed.
But I digress. These were all inevitable developments as Xiao Yanzi envisioned them in his mind. When he discovered that the entire Yang family had been annihilated, and his loyal companion Xiao Liuzi had suddenly perished just like that, his whole world seemed to become unreal. "How could this happen? Why did this happen? This isn't right. Things shouldn't have gone this way." While a person's inherent nature is unknowable, it is undeniable that early family and social education invariably aims to cultivate good individuals. I believe very few parents would tell their children: "You must be a bad person; only bad people can survive well. You must learn to actively harm others, and if others bully you, you should wring their necks." Based on the grand premise of human civilization and a harmonious society, truly evil people are not nonexistent, but they are exceptionally rare; at least, I haven't encountered a single one. What I mean by a truly evil person is someone who commits evil acts but does not perceive them as wrong, feeling no remorse or psychological pressure of any kind. When life is reduced to mere survival, natural law supersedes all legal and moral codes. Only survival becomes the sole truth; right and wrong become a joke. I believe that if a truly evil person exists in this world, they are bound to be both detestable and pathetic.
Xiao Yanzi is not a purely evil person. He commits wrongdoings, perhaps without remorse, but certainly with unease. This unease stems from fear—a fear suppressed in his mind and deliberately downplayed. Fear of what would happen if his plans failed, or if he were discovered. Usually, people themselves are unaware of this fear; what manifests is merely a slight unease and anxiety. But when circumstances suddenly take a turn for the worst, this fear instantly surfaces from the depths of the heart, then becomes infinitely magnified. At this point, a person's mind unravels. A foolproof plan suddenly experiences a drastic reversal, and he is unwilling and unable to believe it. Panic and dismay fill his heart; he becomes dazed, stumbles aimlessly, and mutters to himself. Our Xiao Yanzi encountered the Bloodthirsty Butcher, disguised as Xiao Ningzi, at this very moment. As everyone knows, the Bloodthirsty Butcher was already a monstrous woman; even a fully capable Xiao Yanzi could not stand against her blood-stained left hand. Furthermore, he was already nearly insane. Therefore, Xiao Yanzi appeared very weak, deeply disappointing the audience who had held high hopes for him. It was practically a betrayal of the audience! We thought he was a boss, but he turned out to be just an extra. Alright then, I’ve already explained why Xiao Yanzi died so easily. Now, let’s discuss why he wanted to tie up the two individuals, as this was the central hook of the post.
First, it must be said that those who had foresight regarding Gu Yanzhen had good judgment, because he truly possessed the makings of a ruthless leader. This was evident from his relatively calm demeanor when he and a group of equally pedantic scholars encountered robbers. More importantly, he had never truly suffered a loss. Perhaps some people might think he had, but he cared little for what others perceived as a disadvantage; it was a kind of disdain—he had his pride. However, Yun Zhu delivered a resounding slap to his face, in plain sight, and she was the woman he admired. Consequently, he felt wronged and furious. "She's just a harlot," he thought, "I wanted to take her home and keep her like a canary, thinking she might bring me much pleasure, and doting on her wouldn't hurt. But she dared to defy me! She was given grace but threw it away!" At this moment, Xiao Yanzi felt he had suffered a great, tremendous loss. His feelings for Yun Zhu, which were never truly love, now transformed into utter hatred. Perhaps in a few years, after Xiao Yanzi had suffered more setbacks, he would view this matter differently. But at this time, he was still too young; he took this matter too seriously—so seriously that he believed it had become a thorn in his heart, an obsession. If he didn't thoroughly resolve it, he would even begin to doubt his own capabilities. Only by indulging in an unrestrained, hysterical outburst could he regain his confidence and balance. "Since your ignorance and foolishness made you disdain me and not recognize my worth, then I don't want you anymore, but I will… destroy you!" This should be Xiao Yanzi's true thought. Actually, Bananas explained it quite clearly, but for some reason, people still found it abrupt. I hope this helps.
