Chapter 59

"Little Yuan, Rùnshēng, our seats are here! Oh, it’s soft sleeper, Brother Liàng, you’re really generous!"

Xuē Liàngliàng smiled at Tán Wénbīn and said, "It's not the Spring Festival travel season, so soft sleeper tickets aren't that hard to get."

This compartment had four bunks, exactly enough for the four of them.

After the train departed, Lǐ Zhuīyuǎn climbed into an upper bunk. Xuē Liàngliàng was in the opposite upper bunk, while Rùnshēng and Tán Wénbīn took the lower bunks.

By this time, Tán Wénbīn had already taken out his exercise book, placed it on the small table, and started doing problems.

"'Hey, already doing homework as soon as we get on the train?'" Xuē Liàngliàng teased. "'You're so diligent, it would be a waste of your talent to apply to our Hǎihé University. You should aim for those two universities in the capital.'"

Tán Wénbīn replied honestly, "'My foundation is weak, and I've wasted too much time. If I can even get into Hǎihé, I'll be burning incense in thanks.'"

"'Need some incense?'" Rùnshēng offered him a stick of incense.

Xuē Liàngliàng reminded him, "'Rùnshēng, if you're going to smoke, do it in the vestibule between the cars.'"

"'Alright, got it.'"

Rùnshēng put the incense back into a metal tin. It was a special incense made for him by Aunt Liú, wrapped in a layer of cardboard, very short but thick.

He stood up and pushed the door open, walking to the vestibule. Two people were standing there, smoking. Rùnshēng joined them, took out a tinder tube, twisted off its cap, and blew on it.

The tinder tube was also made by Aunt Liú, as lighting the short, thick incense with matches was quite troublesome.

After lighting the incense, Rùnshēng took a puff and blew out smoke rings. A strong fragrance began to spread, most of it carried away by the gaps in the train door.

The two people next to him, seeing this, were very curious.

"'Brother, what's he smoking?'"

"'You wouldn't know, but they show it in movies – a cigar.'"

After finishing one stick of incense, Rùnshēng walked back. On the way, he saw an old woman with white hair, dressed in black, sitting on a small seat in the aisle. In front of her was a girl in red.

"'Grandma, I'm hungry.'"

The old woman sighed, wiping away tears with the back of her hand.

Rùnshēng felt in his pocket, pulled out a few candies, and handed them to the little girl.

"'Thank you, big brother.'" The little girl smiled happily.

Back in the soft sleeper compartment, Rùnshēng lay on his bunk and fell asleep.

When he woke up, he was hungry. He asked the others, and they all said they were hungry, so he took out the food he had brought from home.

There was dried food and salted cured meat, along with a bottle of liquor.

The liquor was put there by Lǐ Sānjiāng, who said drinking a little while watching the scenery outside the train window was quite atmospheric.

However, none of the four young men drank it.

After the meal, Tán Wénbīn continued doing his homework without stopping.

Lǐ Zhuīyuǎn and Xuē Liàngliàng chatted while watching the scenery outside the window pass by. Most of the time, Lǐ Zhuīyuǎn listened while Xuē Liàngliàng talked, like an evening chat session in a college dorm.

From the structure of rural houses, to living standards in various regions, and even industrial development plans, Xuē Liàngliàng mainly studied water conservancy and architecture. But he also knew a little about other industries, though he wasn't particularly proficient.

However, in an era where information access was extremely inconvenient, knowing so much was a rare skill.

The sky gradually darkened, and the scenery outside became invisible. They only knew their exact location when the conductor announced the stops at regular intervals.

Xuē Liàngliàng got down from his bunk, saying he was going to buy packed meals.

On the way, he encountered an old woman in black, with a little girl in red standing beside her.

"'Grandma, I'm so hungry.'"

Xuē Liàngliàng walked past them to the dining car, bought ten packed meals with meat, and walked back carrying a large bag. As he passed the little girl, he took one out and handed it to her.

"'Thank you, brother.'"
