Chapter 121: Parting Ways

The only organizations in this world that can accommodate Fusers are the Fusionists and the Twilight Society. The Fusionists are entirely composed of Fusers, but their members typically have an almost fanatical reverence for "fusion" and "evolution," believing that the Divine Path is a shortcut that doesn't align with humanity's true evolutionary direction... If you were a Fusionist, you wouldn't have debated good and evil with me just now; instead, you would have urged me to abandon the Divine Path and embrace true evolution."

Han Meng's voice was calm, as if directly striking Chen Ling's deepest secrets.

"So, you are from the Twilight Society."

Hearing this, Chen Ling's brows furrowed slightly beneath his mask. He hadn't expected Han Meng to appear silent, but to actually be waiting for him to speak first, letting his guard down. The reason Han Meng had only mentioned the Crimson Sky Sect and the Twilight Society earlier, omitting the Fusionists, was likely a trap he laid to discern Chen Ling's affiliations.

"Can't I belong to no faction at all?" Chen Ling retorted.

"Of course you can," Han Meng paused. "I admit there was a gamble involved, but now it seems... I've likely won."

Chen Ling was speechless.

"Tricking people again, are we?"

Chen Ling recalled the first time Han Meng had bluffed him. He had avoided it then, but unexpectedly fell for it a second time. Han Meng was a sly old fox; Chen Ling should have left immediately. The longer he stayed, the more weaknesses he revealed. However, even with his Twilight Society identity exposed, Chen Ling wasn't overly flustered. After all, even if Han Meng hadn't probed him, he would have found an opportunity to reveal his affiliation anyway.

The dark mask observed Han Meng for a long time, then let out a soft chuckle, as if it had discovered something interesting.

"You're very clever. Have you considered joining the Twilight Society?"

"No," Han Meng refused outright.

"Why?"

"Because I am an Enforcer, and you are criminals attempting to destroy the world."

"We merely wish to restart the world." The scarlet eyes on the dark mask stared at Han Meng. "You yourself said that Enforcers don't represent good... So why do you believe we are criminals?"

"Restarting the world—isn't that destruction? If the world isn't destroyed, how can it be restarted?"

Chen Ling was stunned.

"Even if the Aurora Domain is rotten to the core, it still shelters millions of people... And Enforcers exist to protect the Domain." Han Meng met the gaze of the mask, calmly replying, "I don't care about other Enforcers, but I, Han Meng, will fulfill my duty to the very end."

A cold wind swept across the gray sky. On the desolate land, the black trench coat and the scarlet operatic robe stood opposite each other, flapping in the wind.

"In that case... you may leave," a detached voice came from behind the mask.

Chen Ling's reason for revealing his Twilight Society identity was to see if he could recruit Han Meng. He felt that Han Meng was completely out of place within the Aurora Domain's entire law enforcement system... A super genius who had been oppressed, overlooked, and exiled beyond Aurora City seemed like the perfect target for recruitment. Han Meng's answer left him somewhat regretful, yet it was also within his expectations. Han Meng also knew that the other party had saved him likely to see if he could be drawn into the Twilight Society. However, with his clear refusal, the other party had completely lost interest in him. That he hadn't moved to kill him on the spot, but instead allowed him to leave, was already beyond Han Meng's expectations.

With the necessary information gathered, Han Meng said nothing more. He cast one last glance at the scarlet operatic robe fluttering in the wind, then turned and walked towards the Grey Realm convergence point he had come from.

In this gray world, two figures, one black and one red, went their separate ways.

As the black figure gradually vanished at the horizon, monstrous, swaying shadows once again approached in the direction Han Meng had departed. The ground trembled slightly, seemingly foretelling the arrival of some catastrophe.

On the desolate earth, the scarlet operatic robe swayed silently. The dark mask gazed in that direction, and after a long while, it shook its head helplessly...

Hearing the distant roars, Han Meng's heart sank. Indeed, his ability to walk safely in the Grey Realm for so long was due to being near the mysterious figure in red. The moment he left their vicinity, disaster had targeted him...

After resting for so long, Han Meng's body had mostly recovered. He took a deep breath, and his figure shot into the air like a black arrow. The Grey Realm convergence point he had arrived from was not far. If he went all out, he should be able to return before the calamities caught up.

As Han Meng ascended, he could see the gray vortex suspended in the air. But around the vortex, waves of shadows were surging madly into it—the very Shadow Centipedes he had fought earlier. Seeing this, Han Meng's heart sank!

"They're going back?"

These Shadow Centipedes had suddenly gone mad, fleeing from Sector Three back into the Grey Realm. Halfway there, they seemed to lose their objective, wandering for a long time before deciding to return the way they came. And judging by their numbers, at least a hundred had already burrowed back in. A flash of urgency appeared in Han Meng's eyes. He rushed at full speed towards the Grey Realm convergence point, but the distance was still too great. He had only covered half the distance when all the Shadow Centipedes had already vanished.

"Damn it..." Han Meng endured the sharp pain from his wounds, accelerated again, and plunged into the gray vortex. The familiar sensation of dizziness washed over him. Han Meng stumbled, and found himself back in the steel factory.

The now desolate steel factory was eerily silent. Through its numerous holes, no trace of the Shadow Centipedes could be seen; they all seemed to have departed. Han Meng rushed out of the factory building and barely caught sight of a few black shadows disappearing into the thick fog... That direction was towards the district.

The Shadow Centipedes must have known Han Meng was trapped in the canyon, leaving no one to stop them in Sector Three. So, they had turned back and launched a surprise attack. This was indeed the case; with Han Meng absent, no one in Sector Three could possibly stop a fifth-tier calamity. Han Meng's heart sank to rock bottom. He knew that even if he rushed to Sector Three now, it would be too late. The sub-entities had already scattered into various streets within the district. No matter how strong Han Meng was, he couldn't be everywhere at once. By the time he eliminated all the sub-entities one by one, they would have likely massacred most of Sector Three.

Han Meng clenched his fists, trying to calm his emotions. Just as he was about to rush out and confront them individually, light footsteps sounded from behind him.

Han Meng whirled around to see the familiar operatic robe, which had appeared atop the factory building at some point, gently fluttering.

"Why are you here?" Han Meng asked, his brows furrowed, his voice low.

"The Grey Realm was too boring, so I came out for some fresh air." On the dark mask, the exaggerated smiling face was partially obscured by the thick fog. He looked down at Han Meng and spoke calmly, "And, by the way, to give you a warning."

"A warning?"

"Light the beacon. They will come because of it."

Chen Ling slowly spread his arms, his large red sleeves fluttering like butterfly wings in the wind, embracing the sky as he leaned forward... The next moment, his body transformed into countless swirling paper butterflies, flying overwhelmingly into the distance. Amidst the flurry of paper butterflies, a single playing card gently floated down to the ground in front of Han Meng. It was the Six of Hearts.
