For Yi Mang, standing at the end of his life, the entire universe held no more secrets. Yet, one initial doubt remained deeply rooted in his heart. He had deduced it countless times without finding an answer, believing he would depart with this unresolved question even at life's end, but then this scene unfolded.
"Dao Brother, I have been waiting for you for a long time." He had a thousand words he wanted to say, but none escaped his lips. At this moment, at life's terminus, he appeared incredibly calm, with a sense of destiny fulfilled; merely seeing the other party brought him contentment.
"You ask what I intend to do?" Standing in the cosmic void, he answered Xu Zhi's question, speaking like an old friend he hadn't seen in a long time: "I want to give this universe a lifespan."
The figure simply smiled, "Does the current universe not have a lifespan?"
"Does it have a lifespan?" Yi Mang replied, "This universe, newly born, will age and perish in less than a thousand years. Its lifespan is less than a speck compared to the ancient chaotic gods."
"Oh?" The figure merely smiled.
Yi Mang continued, "For four-dimensional beings, their time transcends reality. Once they reach the eighth-tier divine realm, they arrive at their distant future in less than seven days, quickly reaching the ninth and tenth tiers. The birth of tenth-tier beings is like the proliferation of stars; they accelerate the completion of the Grand Dao."
"Accelerated completion of the Grand Dao? Is that not good?"
"The completion of the Grand Dao is not good! Once fully completed, the gate to the tenth-tier will close, and no new tenth-tier beings will emerge. The universe will then enter its old age. At this rate of tenth-tier births, the universe will be completed in less than a thousand years, then age, leading to an age of decline where cosmic rules are no longer manifest, no one can master the extraordinary, or leverage the universe's power, and it will gradually be destroyed."
Xu Zhi merely smiled, observing Yi Mang with admiration. Even he was moved, acknowledging that this was indeed the great being who had founded the entire primordial universe, who had opened up heaven and earth and established rules for all living beings! Xu Zhi knew of this scene because of the mature knowledge from a developed universe in the distant future, but Yi Mang, at the very inception of the universe, had already deduced the far future, even to the universe's ultimate end. Such talent was nothing short of astonishing! One could say that at this point, even the universe's end had been fully deduced; the entire cosmic past, present, and all possible future developments held no more secrets for him.
"Then what do you intend to do?" Xu Zhi asked softly.
Yi Mang stood in the void, gazing into the distance, and said coldly, "In this universe I just created, tenth-tier beings are emerging too quickly. In less than a thousand years, not many mortals will have been born, and the universe will not have experienced its full splendor before ultimate beings achieve enlightenment and it heads towards doom. I want this universe to exist not for the gods, but for mortal beings."
Xu Zhi simply listened quietly; Yi Mang needed a listener, nothing more.
"It all stems from four-dimensional beings; a blow must be struck against the gods! Their ability to advance their own time must be limited!" Yi Mang stated coldly. Xu Zhi knew he was referring to high-dimensional spacetime. Yi Mang intended to set a hundred-year limit for their life progression and completely strip them of their power to return to the past. Thus, four-dimensional beings would be cut off both front and back, leaving them with only the nominal ability to quickly reach their future a hundred years ahead.
"Dao Brother!" Yi Mang's eyes gleamed as he continued, "I will not only strike a blow against the gods, but also against all living beings!"
"How will you strike this blow?" Xu Zhi asked.
"Striking at the gods' spacetime is not enough! If living beings remain immortal, only gaining a lifespan after achieving enlightenment, then they will be ageless and undying. Their population will constantly increase, consuming the universe's matter without returning it, thereby clogging the entire cosmos. At the same time, though immortal, they cannot enter the distant future naturally, and after hundreds of millions of years, they will inevitably reach their ultimate state," Yi Mang said with a smile. In this era, acquired beings, like the innate gods and devils, were born immortal, without lifespan limits. He recalled the moment he departed, and his ninth disciple's question to him: Was the decay of life merely coincidental, or would eternal life inevitably lead to decay in the future?
"You intend to strike a blow at the world?" Xu Zhi asked.
"Precisely." His eyes sparkled with vigor, and he laughed aloud, saying: "What good is eternal life? I want everyone in this world to strive only for the present! To live for the day, to contend for the glory and brilliance of this lifetime, not for eternal preservation!" His voice grew increasingly resonant, echoing throughout the universe, his entire being ablaze with power, stirring up winds and clouds. "I want everyone in this world, just like the tenth-tier ultimate beings, to experience formation, dwelling, decay, and emptiness; birth, old age, sickness, and death!"
Xu Zhi knew what he intended to do in the end, but he hadn't realized it would be so monumental! The concept of aging and lifespan, previously applying only to the universe's ultimate beings, would no longer exclude tenth-tier individuals as special cases. He wanted all living beings under heaven to be this way! He wanted all living beings to emulate the existence of tenth-tier beings, afflicted by inexplicable, strange ailments, suffering from skin and flesh diseases, and ultimately reaching the end of old age.
This idea of his would be taken for granted in later generations. But only Xu Zhi knew that in this era, it was a groundbreaking concept! Because in the eyes of all beings in this era, progressing from first-tier to second-tier, and ultimately to tenth-tier, was like different stages of their life growth, similar to a normal person at ten, twenty, or one hundred years old. They would naturally grow to that level, only beginning to age upon reaching the ultimate tenth-tier. But what now? It was tantamount to placing shackles on an infant at ten years old, and more shackles at twenty, layer upon layer, as if wishing to kill this human before they even reached a hundred years old! Evidently, this perspective was terrifying in this primordial universe.
"So that's it," Xu Zhi said softly. "You intend to universalize the 'Dao injuries' of tenth-tier beings across all living beings, establishing 'birth, old age, sickness, and death.' All beings under heaven, including the gods, will despise you utterly. You will be seen as the greatest sinner in their eyes."
"A sinner, so be it. Are the sins on my body not clear enough already?" He suddenly shook his head with a hearty laugh. "From the moment I decayed and fell, the inner desire to create a world of paradise was ruined. From that point on, I knew it was impossible to create a perfect world where all beings living under its rules would be happy. There is no perfection inherent in this universe. So-called perfection exists only for a moment before it leads to destruction. Before, I constantly added perfect rules to make it more perfect. But now, I deliberately want to add imperfect rules to make the world flawed!"
Xu Zhi remained silent. He understood that Yi Mang was filled with remorse and guilt. At this moment, Yi Mang chose to bear the infamy and endure the greatest scorn from all beings, believing himself a sinner and resolving to atone for everything, even embracing the role of the sinner. But was he truly a sinner? Perhaps he had once erred, but no being is without fault. What Xu Zhi witnessed now compelled his admiration for all that this last great ancient god was about to undertake.
"Perhaps beings of this era will scorn you and utterly curse you, but in the distant future, history will vindicate you," Xu Zhi said. "To establish a heart for Heaven and Earth. To secure the life and destiny of the people. To carry on the lost teachings of past sages. And to usher in peace for all generations – without you, there would be no future generations. Everything you do, all the curses you bear, will be worthy of worship by all future enlightened beings."
Yi Mang paused, muttering a phrase, then suddenly said, "I have already gone astray. I clearly initiated the destruction of the entire universe, the decline of our era..."
Xu Zhi shook his head. Only he understood everything most clearly. The Dark Forest principle was inevitable; all acquired things would eventually lead to decay, conspiracy, and machinations. He had merely initiated an era ahead of its time. His actions made him truly worthy of being called the greatest being in the universe. Even a human emperor, no matter how wise, who brought about an age of prosperity, would inevitably make mistakes in their life, just like the First Emperor of humanity, who had both merits and demerits.
Yi Mang no longer struggled with his thoughts; he laughed even louder, looking at Xu Zhi. "I don't know what kind of existence you are, older than the very first being between heaven and earth, but I thank you for witnessing this ultimate moment."
"Dao Brother, you may simply observe."
He stepped forward, let out a great laugh, and declared, "Watch me, as I bring peace to all generations!"
